Here is what has been happening lately with South Bend Civic Theatre’s volunteers.
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE AUDITIONS COMING UP AT SOUTH BEND CIVIC THEATRE
South Bend Civic Theatre is announcing auditions for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which will be performed in the Warner Studio Theatre October 29 through November 7.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a fascinating new non-musical treatment of the classic thriller, written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Jim Geisel. Performances will be October 29 through November 7 in the Warner Studio Theatre at South Bend Civic Theatre. Auditions will be held Saturday, September 11 at 10 AM and Monday, September 13th at 7 PM in the Warner Studio Theatre in South Bend Civic Theatre’s facility, 403 N. Main.
A haunting, driving force runs through this highly inventive script, as Dr. Jekyll becomes increasingly conflicted and unbalanced as he discovers the frightening truth behind his black-outs and the experimental drugs that cause them. Meanwhile, the love that has been denied of Dr. Jekyll falls to Hyde, who is loved by the bold Elizabeth, who loves the creature in spite of the evil she knows he is guilty of. Bizarre turns of event occur as Jekyll attempts to save his research, convert Elizabeth to his own, and separate himself from the creature he has increasingly become… A stunning psychological thriller.
Originally written to double multiple roles, the script calls for a minimum of 4 men and 2 women, and can be played with as many as twice as many actors. The role of Hyde was originally written as split between multiple actors, divided into the various aspects of his character, but the director may choose to cast Hyde as one actor. Other male characters include Dr. Jekyll, Sir Danvers Carew, Richard Enfield, Dr. Lanyon, Gabriel Utterson, and others. Elizabeth Jelkes, a fascinating and critical female role, is written to be played by a young woman in her 20s. The other woman should be played by a woman of middle-age or older.
South Bend Civic Theatre auditions are always open to the public, and no experience is necessary. Auditionees need only attend one of the two audition slots provided for each show, and should bring along a complete list of rehearsal conflicts. Rehearsals usually start within a week of auditions or so, and commonly run four nights a week, more often closer to the opening. It is helpful to be familiar with the script, and scripts may be checked out for 3 days with a refundable deposit of $10 by emailing tami@sbct.org for arrangements. South Bend Civic Theatre is known for color-blind casting unless the playwright has expressed a preference for ethnicity.
Potential auditionees are encouraged to sign up for email audition notices through the sbct.org web site, by following the button for e-newsletters.
