“Intimate Apparel” swept the awards ceremony at AACT-Fest’s National Competition 2009 in Tacoma, Washington and brought home five awards as well as placing 2nd in the overall competition. The production took place on Friday, June 26 with the awards ceremony the following day on Saturday, June 27, and the results finally being relayed to eager fans in South Bend around 12:30 a.m. (Sunday morning). The honors included: Best Set Design, Best Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lead Actress, and Best Director.
The competition took place over the week of June 22, with 12 entries from all over the U.S., including one entry from the United States Armed Forces. Taking the top award was The Chino Community Theatre of California with “Scooter Thomas Makes It to the Top of the World,” and third place honors went to Oklahoma City’s Poteet Theatre-Arts at St. Luke’s with their production of “John and Jen.”
The cast and crew included Caela Barry, Alex Bowman, Kyle Curtis, Matt Davidson, Tabitha Lee, Ben Little, Natalie Davis Miller, Cassandra Nwokah, Anthony Panzica, and Dana Vagg. The production, originally performed in April 2008, won top honors in state competition in March 2009, along with Elkhart Civic Theatre’s “Once on This Island,” and regional competition in April 2009.
