Anna in the Tropics

Anna in the Tropics

Passion and poetry

Synopsis

by Nilo Cruz; directed by Kevin Dreyer

Note: Contains mature themes, cigar smoke, and gunshots

Sensual, and poetic, this Pulitzer Prize winner by Nilo Cruz tells the story of workers at a cigar-rolling factory in 1929 Tampa. In keeping with tradition, a lector reads a book to keep the workers entertained. When the new reader selects “Anna Karenina,” the novel’s passionate prose sparks hidden desires in the workers, leading to a dramatic change in their lives.
